Designing surveys for mobiles
I’m not sure if many of you took part in
the AMSRS webinar in July (yes, I’ve been meaning to post about this for… a
while!) about creating surveys in a mobile world.
A few of us here did and one of the key
points we took away from Pete Cape's presentation is that survey design for mobiles should be turned around
COMPLETELY - indeed that the design should ‘start small and work upwards’.
While it seems blindingly obvious as I now write this, smartphones typically
have only 5% of the screen space of a PC – so trying to ‘transfer’ a survey (or
screener!) that has been designed on your work PC onto a smartphone is a very
difficult task indeed! Researchers should instead be designing ‘for the 5%’
screen and then amending ‘up’ - to a PC.
Some other key points Mr Cape mentioned
·To keep in mind the fact that
people sometimes ‘view’ their phones in landscape and some in profile – to
avoid missing out on questions options, you should check that all your data is visible
in both profile and landscape;
·Avoid traditional grids in
‘legacy style’ as they just don’t work on smartphones
·Minimise the options in
questions or consider splitting your question in two if you really must ask
your respondent to consider them all.
In the Southern Hemisphere we have one of
the highest smartphone ownership rates in the world and are pretty comfortable
using them. In fact, here at THN we often find that people are completing our
email screeners on their phones around the 50%+ mark, so if you’re in any doubt
about optimal screener design, then please don’t hesitate to ask us!
